Front Wheel Diagnosis Procedure
1. Grease Under Front of Vehicle (No Noise)
Diagnostic Procedure - Boot examination
-
A torn boot is the most common cause of
CV Joint failure
-
Grease on suspension, inner tyre sidewall
or fender will indicate a torn boot.
-
A small cut or tear; the grease is clean
and the joint is not making any unusual noise...install
a Boot Kit.
-
A large tear; the boot nearly gone; the
grease is contaminated or no grease in the joint. The
CV Joint will probably need replacing.
2. Snapping or Clicking coming from wheel when accelerating around
a corner
Diagnosic Procedure - Outboard Joint Problem.
Test drive the vehicle on a smooth surface and
verify the problem by:
-
Lightly accelerate or back up with wheels
turned; Listen for snapping or clicking noise at the wheel.
-
If noise remains constant or disappears
- the Wheel Bearing is the Problem.
-
If the noise gets louder, the CV Joint is
worn.
-
A badly worn CV Joint will snap, click or
vibrate when Driving Straight Ahead.
-
Install a new CV Joint and Boot Kit (Service
Kit) if the problem is positively identified as the outboard
CV Joint.
3. Clunk or Vibration when excelerating or deaccelerating
Diagnostic Procedure - Inboard Joint Problem
-
Test Drive vehicle on a smooth surface,
accelerating hard straight ahead.
-
A vibration or shudder indicates a worn
or sticking inboard plunge joint.
-
Accelerating over a driveway ramp at an
angle.
-
A clunking noise indicates a worn inboard
joint.
